Deep repetition in a handful of sectors produces better numbers than shallow experience across all of them. These are the markets where we have priced enough work to know what the ground will do.
Why sector experience changes the number
Construction cost is local, specific, and stubbornly resistant to generalization.
A water pump station, a highway bridge, and a business park pad are all civil construction, but the agencies, standards, testing requirements, subcontractor pools, and failure modes are entirely different. An estimator who has priced twenty pump stations will produce a better number for the twenty first than a generalist will, and will know which line items the generalist would have missed.
The same holds for construction management. Knowing that a water district's inspector will require a specific pipe bedding detail, or that a coastal permit imposes a seasonal work window, is knowledge that comes only from repetition.
We have concentrated on eight sectors. Within each, our experience is in Southern California specifically, which is where the agency behavior, labor market, and geology actually matter.
